Following the proposal from the Global Map Initiative by the Ministry of Construction in Japan to the world, the Global Mapping Project has started ! |
 |
| 1992 |
The Earth Summit was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and the
action plan Agenda 21 was adopted there. Based on the idea that organizing geographical
data is necessary to scientifically cope with environmental problems, as stated
also in the Agenda 21, the Ministry of Construction of Japan (the Ministry of
Land, Infrastructure and Transport at present) proposed the Global Map Initiative.
At the same time, mapping activities have been voluntarily carried out at the
grassroots level and were approved as an official project. This was the beginning
of the Global Mapping project. |
